The man in black: Colin Farrell stars as Detective Crockett in Michael Mann's Miami Vice Wednesday August 2nd 2006 Despite a controversial private life and some notable flops, Colin Farrell's movie career goes from strength to strength. As 'Miami Vice' opens this weekend,REGINA LAVELLE on the secret of his success As Colin Farrell puts his trademark swagger to good use as Detective Crockett in Miami Vice, he must wonder where it all went right. One would imagine that his panned performance in the swords-and-sandals epic, Alexander, would have softened his cough, but not a bit of it. As Farrell's publicity juggernaut cranked into gear, it seemed that neither Farrell nor his considerable public following could give two Persian figs for his critical drubbing in the Oliver Stone movie. Forget Alexander the Great; when it comes to movies, Colin has the Midas touch. Here in Ireland he is, as one critic put it, "our local hero". Empire magazine's Sam Toy says beneath all Colin's bravado and macho posturing, the 30-year-old is a "bloody good actor". He adds: "Colin's got where he is because he's put in some pretty good roles. He didn't get onto the A-list just for being pretty. "He was fantastic in Tigerland, put in a great supporting role in Minority Report and held the screen by himself for 70 minutes in Phone Booth. To do that you need to be a talented guy but there is a disbelief there. To some extent Tom Cruise suffered the same thing last year when he was overexposed, what with all his sofa-jumping. "The public, and the media, have problems distinguishing a good actor from someone who is simply generating column inches. But you can still be a great actor and be horrendously overexposed," adds Toy. Perhaps so, but Farrell's success seems to dwarf that of great Irish actors, like Gabriel Byrne and Liam Neeson, who are reticent to leave themselves vulnerable to intrusion into their private lives. Meanwhile, magazine editors trip over each other trying to woo Colin onto their cover. Because when Colin's a cover-star, he always obliges. His gamey confessions of using prostitutes and washing down ecstasy with gallons of Jack Daniels seemed like mere foreplay compared to the interview he gave GQ magazine in October 2004, in which he nonchalantly admitted to smoking heroin "a couple of times". "Col's drug shame" generated a storm of publicity, incidentally in the month before Alexander premiered. Coincidence? Dr Ruth Barton of UCD's O'Kane Centre for Film Studies thinks not. "He has some incredible publicist. Whoever's doing his PR must be worth a fortune. Around the time of his movie premieres he's on the front of every big glossy magazine, from Vanity Fair down. And there's a reason why - he's just great for soundbite quotes. They're just mildly offensive enough to get people talking. "He's generated this incredible bad boy persona so that his success is as much off-screen as it is on," says Dr Barton. "He's very canny about how he develops his persona. But he's also been lucky in that he broke through at a time when Hollywood was fielding very bland stars. Matt Damon was putting in very solid roles, but he's not that interesting. Matt Damon wouldn't generate any kind of shock media coverage." For sure, Farrell's continued success has been, partly at least, thanks to a near-Faustian pact with the media, whereby his private life is picked over - and often served up - in eye-watering detail. After his drug confessions came the apparently-obligatory-in-Hollywood stint in rehab. Then there were the frothy, fatherly confessions in which the star waxed lyrical about his love for his son James. All very admirable, but surely not something every young father would want to share with the world. But no matter which woman he's romancing, or what jape he's involved in, the press always seem to get wind of it, suggesting some ingenious media manipulation. "It is one of the reasons why he's up there," agrees Dr Pat Brereton of DCU's School of Communications. "He has got a great publicity team and there is a connection between the mediation of his persona and his on-screen success." Where once Farrell cut a lone Irish figure on the A-list, now he's been joined by Corkonian Cillian Murphy. But in terms of style and personality, it seems that there could not be more of a chasm between the two. "They are chalk and cheese," adds Brereton. "They are the two polarities of actors who can both make it in Hollywood. But Cillian's star will rise and rise. "He is an archetypal stage actor, driven by angst and always very unsure of himself; Colin has none of that. People see Colin Farrell as a kind of Joe Bloggs they could go for a pint with. And who wouldn't want to go for a pint with Colin Farrell?" Sam Toy of Empire agrees that the disparity between Colin and Cillian is worth noting: "Colin doesn't seem to mind the constant press and the intrusion into his private life. He actually doesn't seem to care. Cillian is a very different kettle of fish - he's a very, very shy man. "And yet he gets the big roles. He's done Red Eye and the Batman film and he's rumoured to return as the Scarecrow, but he's just as happy doing indie films. But then, I'm sure if you asked Colin Farrell to work with Ken Loach he'd jump at the chance, as would Cillian Murphy to work with ( Miami Vice director) Michael Mann.,In the long-term Farrell's continued success will depend on meaty roles and not meaty newspaper copy. Experts agree that Murphy's theatrically honed and stylised acting has longevity, but are divided as to whether Colin Farrell will manage to forge a name for himself in smaller films like the Terence Malick-directed The New World (2005), or whether he's destined to be an ever-shrivelling "beefcake". Barton believes that Colin's willingness to experiment proves his mettle. "He's making more offbeat films of late. He did A Home At The End of the World (2004) which revolved around a triangular gay relationship. Unfortunately in terms of pushing the boat out it was just too late. "But also working with Terence Malick, an auteur, and doing The New World, very much an arthouse film, is definitely a departure. Arthouse directors want to reshape his very commercial image, so it's a challenge for them as much as it is for him." Some are not so convinced that Farrell's career is destined for Richard Harris-style longevity. "To me A Home At The End Of The World was a fiasco," says DCU's Dr Pat Brereton. "I saw it in Blanchardstown with a crowd of Farrell fans and most of them walked out halfway through. They saw Colin emoting and trying to act and they didn't know what to think. "He actually suits the action-adventure type role because he's a blank canvas. He simply hasn't got the theatrical background to carry something more nuanced. He's destined to be a beefcake. He won't have longevity." Sam Toy is perhaps more generous, saying, "There's a certain rush you get from a big action movie, like SWAT. For Miami Vice there was months of police training, going out with detectives, doing lots of exciting things - what guy wouldn't want to do that for a job? It's great fun". 'Colin is my inspriation' Rory Nolan, 26, is a 2003 graduate of Colin Farrell's alma mater, the Gaiety School of Acting. He has already appeared in 'Improbable Frequency' at the Abbey, 'The Taming of the Shrew' and musical, 'The Wiremen'. "The money is definitely better in TV or film but my heart is in theatre," he says. "I have absolutely no aspiration to celebrity or fame, and I've no immediate aspiration to leave Ireland either. Obviously if a big opportunity presented itself, I'd go for it but then you can't expect to go onto big films and not come away known for it. "The whole Colin Farrell/Cillian Murphy thing only happens to one in a million, and you definitely need a degree of talent to make it. The fact they're good-looking guys is a big help but it's not everything. I think they've been important for the scene as people see them and think, 'Well, why can't we?'"

А еще роликов полно, в которых зая хохмит, и ни фига непонятно и обидно ужасно от этого april пишет: когда такого ангела увидишь - многих клинит Ага.... Я в каком-то ивью переводном читала, как журналистка (или журналист, не помню уже) пишет, что сначала она, када в его глаза взглянула, забыла где у неё приготовленный для ивью листок с вопросами !!!!! И это профи! А уж что про простых смертных женщин-то говорить!!!!
